TMCC Class on Photographing Geologic Landscapes—Saturday, October 5: Mark Vollmer – Picturesque Geology

Create compelling photographs of world-class geologic landscapes. Visit an earthquake fault as well as other geologic formations and discover how to capture their striking patterns. During this photographic, geologic adventure that combines a lecture and field shoot, gain the skills you need to take your pictures to the next level.

Polarizing and graduated density filters
F-stops
Shutter speeds

Find out how these settings and tools allow you to optimize your depth of field and isolate elements to create an artistic image you are proud of.

Taught by Mark Vollmer, a geologist and award-winning photographer who has studied under Galen Rowell and Frans Lanting. His coffee table book, The Tahoe Rim Trail: Exploring the Jewel, broke sales records in area bookstores.

Photo Contest Details for 2018 Calendar—deadline May 31, 2017

Calling all photographers! NBMG is already accepting photographs for the Nevada Geology Calendar 2018.  If you have photographs of interesting geologic features or landscapes from your fieldwork that you would like to submit for next year’s calendar, please email Jack Hursh at NBMG.

Here are the details for this contest for the 2018 calendar:

  • Deadline for entries is May 31, 2017
  • Photos need to be taken in Nevada. A location description and/or GPS coordinates should accompany submissions along with description.
  • High-quality, high-resolution photo files of at least 300 dpi are required for quality printing.
  • E-mail submissions to Jack Hursh (jhursh@unr.edu).
  • NBMG cartographers will make the final decision on the winning photos.
  • Prizes will be awarded for first-, second-, and third-place winners.

This 12-month calendar was designed by Jack Hursh, Jennifer Vlcan, Chris Henry, and Nick Hinz and features a different geologic topic each month (January through December 2017):

Desatoya Mountains, Sand Mountain, McDermitt Caldera, The Sump, Santa Rosa Range, Northern Nevada Orogenies, Mount Rose Glaciation, Basin and Range National Monument, Virginia Mountains, Old Soil Horizons, Pequop Mountains, Little Finland—plus interesting facts about Nevada and the geology of the state.
