AEG Great Basin Monthly Meeting—Thursday, February 15, 2018
Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists, Great Basin Chapter, Monthly Meeting
Thursday, February 15, 2018
SPEAKER: Brett McElhaney
TOPIC: “An Engineer-Philosopher’s Approach to the Interaction of Earthquakes and the Built Environment”
ABSTRACT: The world is not as it seems. This also pertains to the built environment. Energy flow is in everything. Structures that we often think of as “rigid” are actually vibrant with energy and have their own unique personalities (natural period, etc.). Likewise, every earthquake also has its own personality, energy content and frequency signatures. When the energy from an earthquake enters a structure and interacts with its energy there is a dance of energies and it is analogous to a musician (the earthquake) playing a musical instrument (the structure).
BIOGRAPHY: Brett started his professional career in the social sciences, earning a B.S. in Psychology from Midwestern State University in 1991. A few years later, he switched to Civil Engineering and obtained a BS and an MS in Civil Engineering in 1997 and 1999, respectively. In 2005, Brett started his own consulting firm. Currently he holds an SE license in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Texas and Maryland. With no formal business training or classes, he decided to go back to school for an MBA and graduated in Spring of 2015. “This experience has really added another dimension to my mind.”
Brett is an Adjunct Professor of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, teaching Structural Steel Design to fourth year Civil Engineering students.
